I study black holes across the mass scale — from quiescent stellar-mass systems observed with JWST in the mid-infrared, to radio-loud quasars at the edge of the observable universe probed with Chandra. My work connects multi-wavelength observations to the physics of accretion, outflows, and relativistic jets.

About

I am a graduate student in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Michigan, working with Prof. Elena Gallo on the observational astrophysics of accreting black holes.

As an undergraduate, I worked with Dr. Shifu Zhu and Prof. W. N. Brandt on the X-ray properties of high-redshift radio-loud quasars, using Chandra observations to probe the connection between jet activity and X-ray emission at z = 4–7. That early exposure to multi-wavelength black hole science set the direction for my graduate research.

My current work uses JWST to open a new window on quiescent black hole X-ray binaries — systems too faint for traditional X-ray and optical studies — revealing outflows, jet physics, and accretion processes that were previously invisible.

I also have a growing interest in exploring the intersection of AI, machine learning, and statistics with astronomy.

Research

01 ── Quiescent BH X-ray Binaries

JWST Mid-Infrared Studies of Black Hole Outflows

Using JWST/MIRI to probe the faintest accretion states of stellar-mass black holes. My work on A0620−00 revealed a warm bremsstrahlung wind carrying away most of the transferred mass, explaining why quiescent systems are far dimmer than expected.

02 ── High-Redshift AGN

X-ray Properties of Radio-Loud Quasars at z = 4–7

Investigating the anomalous X-ray brightness of jet-bearing quasars in the early universe. Chandra observations of 41+ sources reveal enhancement factors of ~2–3×, probing inverse-Compton scattering off the CMB and jet–environment interactions at high redshift.

03 ── Jets & Early-Universe BHs

Jet Models, Outflows & Black Hole Seeds

Contributing to multizone jet modelling for quiescent X-ray binaries (BHJet) and multi-wavelength reassessments of early-universe black hole candidates. Combining Chandra and JWST data to test claims of direct-collapse black holes at z > 10.
